Do Latter-day Saints believe in a Heavenly Mother?
Yes
Latter-day Saints believe that every person is a beloved spirit son or daughter of Heavenly Parents—a Heavenly Father and a Heavenly Mother. This doctrine is stated in The Family: A Proclamation to the World and is consistent with the teaching that we are children of God (Romans 8:16-17; Hebrews 12:9).
Very little has been revealed about Heavenly Mother, and the Church does not teach speculation about Her identity or attributes. We honor Her as a divine parent but do not pray to Her; following Jesus Christ’s example, we pray to Heavenly Father (Matthew 6:9; John 17:1-3). The doctrine affirms the eternal nature of the family and the divine potential of God’s children (Genesis 1:27; D&C 132:19).
1. These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2. As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3. And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent.
And again, verily I say unto you, if a man marry a wife by my word, which is my law, and by the new and everlasting covenant, and it is sealed unto them by the Holy Spirit of promise, by him who is anointed, unto whom I have appointed this power and the keys of this priesthood; and it shall be said unto them—Ye shall come forth in the first resurrection; and if it be after the first resurrection, in the next resurrection; and shall inherit thrones, kingdoms, principalities, and powers, dominions, all heights and depths—then shall it be written in the Lamb's Book of Life, that he shall commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, and if ye abide in my covenant, and commit no murder whereby to shed innocent blood, it shall be done unto them in all things whatsoever my servant hath put upon them, in time, and through all eternity; and shall be of full force when they are out of the world; and they shall pass by the angels, and the gods, which are set there, to their exaltation and glory in all things, as hath been sealed upon their heads, which glory shall be a fulness and a continuation of the seeds forever and ever.
Belief that there is a Mother in Heaven who is a partner with God in creation and procreation is not the same as the heavy emphasis on Mariology in the Roman tradition. Today the belief in a living Mother in Heaven is implicit in Latter-day Saint thought. Though the scriptures contain only hints, statements from PRESIDENTS OF THE CHURCH over the years indicate that human beings have a Heavenly Mother as well as a Heavenly Father. Little has been revealed about our Heavenly Mother beyond a knowledge of Her existence. Although we do not worship Her, we honor Her as a divine parent. Following the example of the Savior, we pray only to our Heavenly Father.1 We receive guidance and direction from Heavenly Father and His Son through the Holy Ghost.
